Aronia melanocarpa, Black Chokeberry - Pb6.5 (1m+)

Aronia melanocarpa tends to be small, rarely exceeding 1m in height and spreads readily by root sprouts. The leaves are small, not more than 6cm wide with terminal glands on leaf teeth and a glabrous underside, have great autumn colour. The flowers are white with glabrous sepals. The fruit are black and often eaten by birds.

Traditionally, Potawatomi Native Americans used black chokeberry to treat colds, coughs and fever. It has been found to contain numerous active ingredients.

Aronia berries are considered one of the richest sources of plant antioxidants, which are said to offer many health-promoting properties. It is no wonder why these small, dark berries have become popular among health-conscious consumers. They have a strong mouth-drying effect, so they’re mainly used to make jams, jellies, juices, purées, syrups, teas, and wines.

Plant in full sun or part shade in moist, free-draining soils.
